Day 3, 21.10.2012, Riga

10:00 Breakfast at the Cafe L'chaim
Departure and visit to Salaspils (20 km from Riga), the Memorial to the victims of the Nazis. At this site, obscured by dense forest, the Nazis herded thousand of victims to be executed and buried in the anonymity of mass graves. Jews were brought from as far away as Austria and Germany; many Latvians and Russians were killed at this site as well. The current monument was unveiled only in 2001, and it illustrates the persistent Jewish soul and its refusal to be forgotten.

Departure to Tukums (90 km from Salaspils). Tukums is a typical Eastern European town, well preserved and well maintained. The Jewish sites include two former synagogues (one completely rebuilt, another preserved from the outside), apartment and public buildings, and the cemetery. Tukums is considered to be the most convenient place to see the "shtetl" not very far from Riga.

Departure to Riga. On the way stop and excursion in Jurmala - the largest seaside and spa resort in the Baltic States. The town is known for its unique natural resources such as its curative mineral waters, medicinal mud, pine forests and sand dunes. The town’s architecture is represented by many styles including unique wooden architecture (late19th-early 20th cent.), classicism, art nouveau, national romanticism as well as functionalism.
